In Russia can fully legalize eSIM

Russian Deputy Prime Minister Maxim Akimov instructed the Ministry of Communications, the Federal Antimonopoly Service, the FSB, telecom operators and the expert community toprepare proposals by January 15, 2020 on the regulatory framework for the legalization of electronic SIM cards.

The FAS confirmed that they received an order and will take an active part in resolving the issue.

We consider the introduction of eSIM very important and timely, it will be a significant tool for developing competition in the market, and, therefore, for improving the conditions for consumers.

– Elena Zayeva, Head of the FAS Communications and Information Technology Regulation

Operators believe that, first of all, it is necessary to agree with the manufacturers of smartphones and solve technical problems . For example, where to store subscriber profiles and cryptographic keys. The FSB and the Ministry of Communications want all data to be stored in Russia.

Earlier, MTS, MegaFon and Beeline spoke out against the introduction of eSIM in Russia. Operators feared that regular SIM card sales would fall after the advent of eSIM. [ Kommersant ]
