One of the largest banks in North America, Capital One, has admitted to a massive user data leak. A total of 106 million people were affected – one hundred million in the United States and six million in Canada.
The hacking occurred in March, but information about the incident appeared only now. The attackers gained access to 140 thousand US social security numbers, one million social security numbers in Canada, 80 thousand bank account numbers, plus an unknown number of names, credit histories, money balance data, addresses and other personal information.
The hacker has already been detained – it is assumed that for such a large-scale burglary is the 33-year-old Paiji Thompson from Seattle. She worked for a cloud company with which Capital One interacted. The girl was arrested last Monday.
Damage from a hacker attack is estimated at $ 100-150 million. Capital One shares sank 5% today.
